The project

Sesame Access Systems Ltd has installed one of its bespoke wheelchair lifts in the Elizabethan banqueting Hall at The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, London. Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of court, entitled to call its members to the English bar as barristers.

The Sesame Lift will be used to transport people in wheelchairs, and standing pedestrians, from the pavement level, up seven steps to the upper landing level.

The hidden lift has an automatic glass gate and interacts with the original door at the upper landing level for safety. The lift is clad with York stone and Portland stone around the glass barriers.

The hall at The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple is the building where the first-ever live performance of Shakespeare’s play took place (Twelfth Night).

Ian Garwood, Director of Estates and Surveyor to the Middle Temple said "Our Hall is one of the of the oldest and historically most important buildings on the estate. Built in 1570, it is still used daily for lunches, corporate events and evening functions.

"Having suffered reliability issues with a previous lift installation in the same location, we turned to Sesame Access to provide a good quality and reliable solution. We are very pleased with the installation and would highly recommend Sesame to anyone seeking step-free lift access solutions to historic buildings in sensitive locations."

Alison Lyons OBE, Director of Commercial Development at Sesame Access said

"We are really proud to have installed a Sesame Lift at Middle Temple. It blends in really well to the Grade I listed building. We look forward to people in wheelchairs accessing such an amazing building for weddings, events, work and tours. Our mission is to remove barriers with ease."

London has four Inns of Court: Middle Temple, Inner Temple, Gray’s Inn and Lincoln’s Inn
